I am so proud of my class and their growth this year, especially my target group of students! They scored an average of 425 lexile points at the beginning of the year. After their May SRI assessment they average 597, which is almost at the fourth grade benchmark of 600-900! I'm so proud of them!!
Student 1 (Jason) was a harder student for me to target because he had over 30 absences this school year. He began the school year with a lexile score of 246 and ended the year at 470. He was one of my students who attended Lisa Harde's reading group MWF during Enrichment time, but he missed significant interventions first semester, and several days second semester as well. I arranged to have a parent volunteer work with him on work completion Thursdays during Enrichment time. Jason also worked with Wendy Myers on Written Expression during Writing. Although Jason missed a lot of direct instruction, I am pleased that he grew 178 points this year. SRI suggests a year's growth is 75-100 lexile points, so I am happy he made that progress and more!
Student 2 (Hannah) grew 187 lexile points this year. She began the school year with a lexile score of 542, so she was just below the fourth grade benchmark of 600. Hannah is a contentious student and she was really receptive to learning new strategies to become a better reader. Hannah worked once each week with a parent volunteer on reading. They previewed the upcoming Social Studies lesson and discussed vocabulary pertinent to the content. This reinforcement of strategies we were learning in the classroom really helped Hannah. She ended the year with a lexile score of 729, which means she met her goal and is right on target for fifth grade!
Student 3 (Aiden) grew 104 lexile points before he moved in December. His end of the year goal was 619 and he was definitely on track to meet that goal. Aiden only took the September and November SRI tests, so his November test showed 590, which was a growth of 104 points in such a short time. He did attend Lisa Harde's reading group twice per week and was showing progress with comprehension strategies and note taking.
Student 4 (Andrew) is such a kind child and he really struggles because he is Autistic. So I am definitely pleased with the growth he made this year!! Although he didn't meet the SRI projected growth goal, he raised his score from 198 to 373!! That is 175 lexile points--almost two year's growth! Andrew really struggles with written expression, so the note-taking strategies and written comprehension is quite difficult for him. He worked with Mrs. Alexander to dictate and process the information, which proved to be very helpful this year. Towards the end of the year we encouraged Andrew to type his responses, which he really enjoyed and was able to show more of his knowledge this way. I am looking forward to see how much he will accomplish next year!
Student 5 (Samantha) moved early in the school year, so I didn't have a lot of time to work with her. Her beginning score was 594, so she was just below benchmark when the school year began.
Student 6 (Brendan) made great strides in reading this year! At the beginning of the school year, Brendan scored 413 on his SRI assessment. He scored 749 on his May assessment. That's growth of 336 lexile points this year!! At the start of the year he really struggled with attending during instruction and work time, not just in reading. Around Thanksgiving, Brendan started taking medication to help him focus and attend in class. What a difference that made! He was receptive to reading, learning new strategies, focusing during Mrs. Harde's reading group MWF, and he began taking ownership of his learning! He has grown not only as a reader, but as a writer! He also worked with Wendy Myers during writing time twice per week the last few months of the year. I am so proud of all he has accomplished this year!
Student 7 (Nicholas) grew 208 lexile points this year. He did an excellent job focusing during reading and trying to learn and use the strategies that good readers use for reading and written expression. Nick scored 500 on the September SRI test and crushed the SRI projected growth target with his score of 708! He also worked with a parent volunteer on reading once per week. They focused on vocabulary and informational text, helping reinforce the strategies we were using in the classroom.
